When the enemy unleashed gas for the first time during the Battle of Gravenstafel Ridge on 22nd April, 1915 the 2nd Gloucestershire battalion of 81 Brigade, 27th Division was close to the action in trenches in Sanctuary Wood but were not directly involved in the fighting. After a short break they were back in these trenches on 28th April and it was here on 30th April, a day of heavy shell fire, that Alfred Marshall was killed. |
